Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
In the Animal Kingdom Lodge, otherwise known as the AKL, Disney has designed an African-inspired resort that truly is like no other found in Walt Disney World. From views of wild animals roaming the savannas to daily African-themed activities, this deluxe resort is a unique way for guests to experience the magic of Disney.
A main attraction at the AKL is that all 1,293 rooms come with a balcony. What these balconies overlook can vary with views ranging from pool views and standard views - the parking lot, dirt trails, etc., - to views of the savannas. Standard rooms, which can have two queen beds, one king bed or a queen and a set of bunk beds, start in the $240 per night range. The price rises as the room’s view improves as it does for suites.
Daily activities at the AKL are another draw for guests. Safaris at sunrise and sunset are an option as is viewing the Animal Kingdom animals at night through night vision goggles. For the kids, AKL has two “camps” that run about two hours each and offer further exploration of the resort.
Other activities include the Uzima Springs Pool, the resort’s central, zero-entry pool, which is complete with a slide, two hot tubs and a children’s wading pool. When an afternoon shower strikes, the Pumbaa’s Fun and Games Arcade offers games to pass the time. Those seeking to keep in shape will find the large Zahanti Spa and Fitness Center to their liking.
Dining options at the AKL include two restaurants highly favored among the many Disney eatery choices: Boma, the African buffet open for breakfast and dinner, and Jiko, a dinner-only restaurant. Both serve fare with an African flair, and Jiko is noted to carry the largest selection of South African wines in the US. Sanaa is another sit-down dining option that has the added bonus of great savanna and animal views. For casual, counter service, try The Mara.
For a unique shopping experience, be sure to check out the Zawandi Marketplace. Besides vacation basics, guests can also find African souvenirs here.
Other amenities at the AKL include guest laundry and on-site childcare via Simba’s Clubhouse.
As always, staying at a Disney resort gives guests access to perks, such as extra hours at the theme parks and Disney transportation throughout Walt Disney World.
